When people wanted to go to sleep several thousand years ago, they used to just pile leaves or hay on the ground, and throw an animal skin on it, then nod off. An idea was born to raise beds off of the ground, and this would help with draft avoidance, pests, and definitely dirt!  Only the wealthy could afford these added expenses of materials, and later, decorations for the new types of beds. Legend has it that the last remaining giant, King Og, had a bed that was 13.5 feet long and 6 foot wide. Most modern people will not need a bed quite so big, so we offer many varieties of headboards to finish off your bed and make it look quite elegant.

Iron Beds

Iron beds, are extremely long-lasting and can be in any particular style that you like. The photo below shows a bed created in a Baroque style. This period in human history has come to be known for its opulence and high decoration, with many gilt touches and lovely colours and decorations. Even if your home is decorated in a more contemporary style, a lovely-looking iron bedstead such as this one, could enhance any bedroom.

Baroque Queen Iron Bed

Of course, you may live in a castle, or a mansion, or house of modest means. Along with this Baroque-styled iron headboard, and footboard, and frame, one of the walls in your bedroom may be a focal wall and can be painted in a high colour, such as burgundy red. Some people love tapestries, and these would look entirely appropriate as decorations. Along with this style of beds, your linens could either be very luxurious, or done in a pristine white. Either would be gorgeous, and you will get compliments on your family, friends, and guests.

Canopy Beds

Nothing speaks of romance more than a canopy bed. This style of bed may have emerged in medieval Europe. Curtains were hung above the bed and as we see from many illustrations, there was often a hanging lantern or lamp over the mattress. One can only hope, that the occupants of the bed it did not sit up suddenly in the middle of the night, and then bang their forehead! Wealthy people would often use sumptuous brocades, satins, silks, and other materials, in both their comforters and curtains.

In tropical climates, a canopy bed is used for purposes other than mere decoration, and this is to prevent mosquitoes from attacking humans. Malaria can be a serious and even deadly disease.  Soft and white netting can be draped over your canopy bed, to give your bedroom an exotic look. In the dead of winter, with white snow piled up outside and the trees all bleak and blackened, you can be kept warm in your tropical pocket while sitting in your canopy bed!

Iron-Wood Beds

In the 17th century, beds were quite large and often, European royalty had to pack up their furniture and move around a lot! Obviously, you couldn’t have 20 people lugging around your bed, so they became lighter and more portable. Things started to settle down in Europe, so people could have a bigger beds made. These would probably last a very long time. Our modern iron and wood beds can be made in any style, and the combination between the two natural materials is often striking.

Feather pillows, by the way, were first used in Germany during the 18th century. Comforters may have followed, and these two items are still with us today. Of course, people can be allergic to feathers and so, many other materials may be substituted. If you get an iron and wood bed, you can also use several styles of linens, from those made from natural materials,  to colourful and luxurious styles.

Platform Beds

These kinds of beds are fantastic for either a child’s room, a person living in a small apartment, or guestroom. They are basically a mattress placed on a solid surface, usually made from wood. The advantages of a platform bed are that they either have drawers or storage areas underneath them, or that people can store items such as shoe boxes or plastic bins quite easily. They are kept out of sight, but very accessible.

Wood Beds

Wood has been used for beds since they were first thought of. Beds probably started out with four poles, a rectangle of poles attached to the four, with a lacing of leather straps crisscrossed through and under the bed frame. At first, animal skins were thrown onto this base. Some years after that, a sack stuffed with soft leaves or hay would have been placed on the platform

Upholstered Headboards

Many different sizes of beds have existed throughout history, and they do vary considerably even today. There are toddler beds, single beds (often known as twin beds), double beds, queen sized beds, king-size beds, and California King beds. The latter is longer and wider than a king bed. Of course, unless you live in California, this size may not be available. Whatever size bed you have, an upholstered headboard is a fantastic touch and will help, especially if you are restless sleeper.

Rails & Frames

We have come a long way since the first beds are made by weaving strips of leather for a wooden frame. Thousands of years ago, beds are often made to be portable and disassembled fairly easily. A lot of people were nomadic, and moved to where the hunting animals were at that moment. They had to load up everything they owned to go along with the herds. This meant putting the children, furniture, and pots and pans onto your cart or camel or donkey, and then unloading it at the end of your journey. If you were tired and the weather was bad, there was a necessity to reassemble your home as fast as possible.

Steel Bed Frame

Today, thank goodness, there are easy to assemble and disassemble rails and frames to hold up your bed. They are usually made from metal and wheels make them easy to move around and place wherever you want to in your bedroom. When assembled, the wheels also make it easy to place your mattress correctly, and then later, dust the floor under your bed.

Bed & Trundle

What a terrific and useful kind of bed this is for a child’s room. When not in use, the trundle bed is tucked away under its regular bed. Children can have friends over, and if your space is tight in a small bedroom, two children in a family can each have their own bed. This iron and wood trundle bed is beautiful! It would fit into a rustic decor, or perhaps a Spanish themed one. It is special when you have a trundle bed and your child has a buddy over. They could talk about things that happened at school, or read to each other, or tell stories.

Storage Beds

These types of beds are wonderful, even if you have enough regular space in your home. Because there are drawers under the bed, a child can hide all their secrets and treasures under there! A teenager would love this type of bed, and it would even work well in the guest room which could be short of space. Sometimes we only have one guest room, and it has to serve several purposes. A lot of folks use their guestrooms for an office as well. This means that the closet can be taken up by office supplies, and not available for a guest’s clothing, for instance.

A storage bed is also great for a child returning from college, and only there for a few weeks. They can pop all their things out into the drawers under the bed, and then repack when they have to return to school. This kind of bed is fantastic in a vacation home as well. A home that a family stays in just a few weeks a year, may be fairly small, and storage can be at a premium.

Key distinctions between a Hospital Bed and an Adjustable Bed

Structure – An adjustable bed is designed to take the place of your traditional bed and comes in a variety of sizes and firmnesses.  A hospital bed is typically 36″ x 80″  to allow easier access for care-givers on both sides of the patient.

As well, most proper hospital beds offer the ability to raise and lower the entire bed. This means that you can lower the bed to have the patient’s feet on the floor when sitting on the bed, so they can stand up without jumping or sliding down off the mattress. An unfortunate return customer visting the store to look for a new king size mattress set lost control of their car in our Dundas St. parking lot today.
Luckily no one was hurt, just a little embarrassed.

Thanks to  Peel Police ,  Mississauga Firefighters and ,as we speak, Winmar Property Restoration Specialists  still here at 11 p.m. helping with the clean up, re-securing the store and alarms.
