Futons are a great solution for that needed extra bed but also function well as a sofa.
Most futons provide a sleep surface the same size as a double mattress 54″ x75″ although it is possible to find them in queen size as well.
The futon frames usually come un-assembled which makes them easy to transport and simple to take up or down the tight staircases in older homes.
The least expensive frames are are solid steel while the most popular futons have arms made of wood and the body made of steel.
You can find complete wooden frames but at a cost similar to a conventional sofa. There are many qualities of futon mattresses to be found from cheap solid foam that will break down in months to  quality mattresses featuring alternate layers of foam and cotton and designer covers.
